The Carlos G. Baldoceda Memorial Fund (Carlos’ Fund) was founded in August 2003 when Carlos passed away from a brain tumor at age 22. Carlos’ true love was his music, which he began to pursue in high school by taking lessons in guitar. Soon after, he taught himself the banjo. Close friends remember that Carlos was drawn to and very passionate about contemporary artists such as Ben Harper and Bela Fleck, teaching himself by listening and playing music by ear. He learned to appreciate all different types of music, molding his technique by listening to bluegrass legends Flatt and Scruggs and Bill Monroe, classic blues artists John Lee Hooker and Muddy Water, and pop music like the Beatles. While in college Carlos continued to follow his passion and with help of friends from CalTech began to record his own music.
